You are about to discover something truly important. You’ve studied the great philosophical dialogues and are practiced in the modern techniques. Perhaps a short walk will inspire your thinking.

This ~15 minute atmospheric adventure game features all original art and sound, taking a vibes-first approach to remind you of what you already know: that a true alchemist can turn even shadows into gold.

Arrows to move, space to interact.

Size Warning: this game may take a minute to load due to the amount of art and sound assets.

Made in Godot, +Dialogic plugin, +Schwabacher font.

(Note: This was originally a submission to a game jam with the theme Shadows and Alchemy, but I had misunderstood how that jam operates, so I've since withdrawn.)

Known issues:

  • can't pause during dialogue (I had to disable it because dialogic wants to be in front of everything. If anyone knows how to change this please let me know, I'm new to Godot and Dialogic.)
  • I don't know why the font is so low-res in fullscreen when the game is running. It looks good in-editor. Anyone who understands fonts, help me
  • I tried to add controller support but Dialogic isn't playing nice. Anyone who knows why it won't allow selecting a choice with my controller input (but will scroll through choices and progress dialogue where there's multiple in a row), or how to directly signal it to select a choice from code so I can work around whatever it's doing internally, let me know.

Sheet music for "The Waters When They Come" available in the downloads, for SSSA (as heard in the game, but too high/low for many vocalists) and SATB (transposed down to A minor, might be suitable for your local choir if you want to sing an alchemy song? Feel free to use noncommercially and for educational purposes).

This is one of the boldest entries I've seen! Full committal to the concept and the music is excellent

Haha, I like the description "boldest", thank you. I haven't made a game with a dialogue mechanic before, so I didn't quite know what I was getting into when I designed it.

Great game, beautiful music!

Thank you! I worked really hard on the music and appreciate the comment :)
